Colorful rainy family photos at Jeffrey Mansion in Bexley, Ohio

Jeffrey Mansion Family Photos in Columbus, Ohio | A Playful Rainy Day Family Session

Some of my favorite family sessions happen when things don’t go exactly according to plan!

This sweet family session at Jeffrey Mansion was originally gifted as a Mother’s Day present, which I already think is such a meaningful gift. I’ve photographed this family several times through mini sessions over the years, so it was especially fun to finally do a full session with all four of them. Their family has grown so much since I first met them, and this was my first time meeting their youngest daughter!

When we scheduled their session, we had no idea that rain would be in the forecast. As the date got closer, I kept an eye on the weather and let them know that we could absolutely reschedule if they preferred. Since it looked more like a rainy day than a stormy day, I suggested something a little different. Instead of avoiding the rain, why not embrace it?

They were completely on board, and I’m so glad they were!

Why Jeffrey Mansion Is One of My Favorite Family Session Locations

Jeffrey Mansion is such a unique spot for family photos in the Columbus area. The historic mansion has beautiful architecture, warm brick and stone details, grand wooden doors, and elegant staircases on both sides of the building. It feels elevated and timeless while still being incredibly welcoming.

Beyond the mansion itself, there are plenty of open grassy areas, walking paths, trees, and even a playground nearby. The grounds around the mansion are definitely my favorite part because there are so many beautiful backdrops within a short walking distance.

A Rainy Family Session Full of Personality

One of the girls had a very important request: she had to wear her favorite rainbow dress. It was her non negotiable outfit choice, and honestly it could not have been more perfect for a rainy day session. It felt like she brought the rainbow with her!

She paired it with rain boots and the cutest colorful bubble umbrella, while I brought along a few clear umbrellas for the rest of the family. Instead of trying to avoid the puddles, we embraced them. We ran, splashed, laughed, and played together. The rain became part of the story, and the photos are so much more meaningful because of it!

Their family was so wonderfully goofy with each other, which is exactly the kind of energy I love during family photos. Of course we captured a few classic smiling portraits, but most of the gallery is filled with movement, laughter, and genuine connection. Those are the photos that tend to become favorites because they feel the most like them.

What If It Rains During Your Family Photo Session?

This is one of the questions I get asked most often, and my answer is almost always the same: it depends.

If there are strong storms, lightning, or conditions that would make your session unsafe or miserable, we’ll absolutely reschedule. I always keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to your session and will communicate with you every step of the way.

But if we’re expecting a light rain or a passing shower, don’t count your session out just yet!

Some of my favorite family photos (like this one) have happened on rainy days because everyone lets go of the idea of having a “perfect” session and simply has fun together! Kids love splashing in puddles, colorful rain boots and umbrellas add so much personality, and overcast skies create beautiful soft light for photographs.

My biggest piece of advice is to lean into the experience instead of fighting it. The best family photos aren’t about perfect weather. They’re about genuine connection, real laughter, and making memories together, even if everyone ends up with a few raindrops in their hair.

Thinking About Family Photos at Jeffrey Mansion?

If you’re looking for a Columbus Ohio family photographer and want a location that offers both beautiful architecture and space for kids to be kids, Jeffrey Mansion is such a great option.

And if your session day happens to come with a little rain? Don’t be afraid to lean into it. Sometimes the unexpected weather creates the most joyful memories and the most unique photos!

I’m so grateful this family trusted me to document this season of their lives, puddles and all!
