As a Columbus, Ohio senior photographer, one of my favorite parts of this job is getting to create a session that truly reflects who each senior is and Vincent’s session was the perfect example of that.
From the very beginning, Vincent, a Canal Winchester High School graduate, and his mom had two different visions for his senior photos. His mom was hoping for those classic, timeless senior portraits, while Vincent wanted something completely different—something more creative, edgy, and industrial.
And I love a challenge like that.
During our planning, I spent some time digging a little deeper to understand what Vincent was drawn to. He mentioned the idea of a warehouse or something with an industrial feel, but wasn’t quite sure how to bring it to life. As we talked more, he shared that he plays drums in a hardcore rock band, and that was the moment everything clicked.
I knew we could create something really unique.
We built a session that blended both visions, starting with the more traditional side and then transitioning into something bold and artistic.
We began at Goodale Park. The greenery, the open space, and the timeless feel made it the perfect setting for those more formal portraits his mom was hoping for. We also snuck in a few personality-driven shots here to start telling Vincent’s story.
Then we shifted gears.
For the second half of his senior session, we headed to a downtown parking garage to create that industrial, urban vibe Vincent had envisioned. What I love about locations like this is how simple they are—it allows the focus to stay completely on the senior while giving us that edgy backdrop.
And this is where things got really fun.
Vincent brought his drum set, and we leaned fully into his identity as a musician. As the sun started to set, we used off-camera flash and colored gels to create bold, high-contrast images with a darker, moodier feel. The combination of the urban setting, dramatic lighting, and Vincent doing what he loves made these images feel like artwork.
This part of the session pushed me creatively in the best way, and it quickly became one of the most unique and creative senior sessions I’ve photographed.
Most importantly, Vincent lit up during this part of the shoot and that’s always the goal! When seniors feel like themselves, that’s when the magic really happens.
By the end of the session, we had a gallery that felt complete: timeless portraits for his family, and creative, expressive images that truly represented Vincent.
And the best part? They loved them all.
To bring everything together, they chose a signature album for his senior photos, which showcased the bold colors and creativity from the session in such a meaningful, tangible way. It’s one of those pieces that only becomes more valuable over time – a way to relive this season of life for years to come.
Sessions like Vincent’s are exactly why I love being a senior photographer in Columbus, Ohio. Every senior has a story, and getting to tell that story in a way that feels authentic, creative, and personal is something I never take for granted.
