A Playful Baseball-Themed Family Session at Golden Hour

There’s something so special about photographing families year after year – getting to watch little ones grow, seeing personalities develop, and creating a space where everyone can simply be themselves. The Toeller family is one of those families, and every time we plan their session, we always have a blast!

As a Columbus, Ohio family photographer, these are the kinds of sessions I love most – playful, relaxed, and centered around real connection.

A Fun & Meaningful Session Theme

This year, Jessica had the sweetest idea for their family session: a baseball-inspired evening at golden hour. Not only are they big fans of the Cincinnati Reds, but it was also the perfect fit for their season of life, especially with their youngest, Henry (2 years old), being completely obsessed with balls right now.

We met at Roger Hanners Park, where the open baseball fields gave us the dreamiest golden light and plenty of space for the boys to run and play.

Letting Kids Be Kids (The Magic of Lifestyle Photography)

Johnny (4.5 years old) was excited to show off his skills with the bat, and every time he made contact with the ball felt like a huge win. Meanwhile, Henry happily collected baseballs, tossed them around, and fully embraced the joy of the moment.

Instead of stiff posing, we leaned into movement and play:

• Running bases
• Tossing baseballs back and forth
• Snuggling up in the bleachers
• Giggling, chasing, and just being kids

This is what lifestyle family photography is all about – capturing authentic moments as they naturally unfold. The laughter, the cuddles, the little in-between interactions… those are the memories that matter most.

Ending the Night with Ice Cream

After lots of playing (and a little bit of tiredness setting in), we wrapped up the session with the most perfect treat: ice cream from Johnson’s Real Ice Cream!

And honestly? This might have been one of my favorite parts of the evening.

Jessica even brought along the cutest Cincinnati Reds bowl, which added such a fun and personal touch. The boys’ personalities really came out here – between excited bites, a little bit of “I want that one,” and those very real sibling moments we all know and love.

It was the perfect, joy-filled ending to a playful summer session.
