Wildflower Maternity Photos in Columbus, Ohio

If there is one thing I want expecting moms to know about maternity photos, it is this: you do not have to overthink them.

You do not need the perfect dress, perfect hair and makeup, perfect weather, or an elaborate plan for your session to end up with beautiful photographs that you will treasure.

Cierra’s summer maternity session was a pretty perfect example of that. Despite the chaos leading up to her session, she ended up with beautiful wildflower maternity photos!

When Should You Take Maternity Photos?

I typically recommend scheduling maternity photos somewhere around 29 to 34 weeks, depending on how you’re feeling and how your pregnancy is progressing. You want your bump to be beautifully visible, but you also don’t want to wait so long that you’re uncomfortable or worrying about whether baby might arrive before your session.

For that reason, I also recommend scheduling maternity sessions a little earlier than you might initially think. Especially during the summer in Central Ohio, when weather can be unpredictable, having some flexibility to reschedule is important.

And sometimes, even with all the planning in the world, Mother Nature has other ideas.

When Your Perfect Plan Doesn’t Go According to Plan

Cierra and I originally planned her maternity session at Inniswood Metro Gardens during golden hour. I arrived early to scout the location and found exactly what I was hoping for: beautiful open spaces, wildflowers, and gorgeous evening light.

Then, right as her session was supposed to begin, a pop-up storm rolled in.

The forecast had looked clear all day, but suddenly we were dealing with an absolutely enormous downpour. Cierra and her partner arrived and waited in their car while we hoped the storm would pass, but it quickly became clear that this was not a situation where we could simply grab an umbrella and make it work.

So we rescheduled.

Our next date was also looking questionable weather-wise, and because Cierra was getting further along in her pregnancy, I didn’t want to keep pushing her session closer and closer to her due date. We decided that moving the session to a location with an indoor option would give us a much better backup plan.

That brought us to Humble + Pine, a beautiful greenhouse and garden space that gave us the best of both worlds.

And, of course, on the day we finally photographed her session, we ended up with absolutely beautiful weather and a gorgeous golden hour.

Sometimes you just have to roll with it.

Beautiful Maternity Photos Don’t Have to Be Complicated

By the time we finally got to her session, Cierra had been through quite a bit of unexpected chaos. She was further along in her pregnancy than when we originally planned the photos, so her plans for her outfit had changed, and her son had even managed to toss some of her makeup out the car window on the way there.

So this was not exactly the perfectly polished maternity session she may have imagined when we first started planning. And you know what? It didn’t matter.

Cierra wore a simple, brown, form-fitting dress that beautifully showed off her growing bump and went barefoot! She finished getting ready in the car, and we headed outside into the gardens at Humble + Pine.

She looked beautiful.

We photographed her exactly as she was in that moment, surrounded by flowers and warm evening light, celebrating this little season of life before her baby arrived.

And the photos turned out GORGEOUS. The wildflower maternity photos at golden hour vision officially came to life!

A Summer Maternity Session at Humble + Pine

Humble + Pine was such a beautiful setting for Cierra’s maternity photos. The greenhouse provides a natural backup option for unpredictable weather, while the surrounding gardens offer beautiful outdoor spaces for portraits.

We were able to take advantage of the wildflowers, greenery, and gorgeous golden hour light, creating a gallery that felt warm, natural, and completely focused on Cierra and her growing family.

That is one of the things I love most about maternity photography. You don’t need a complicated setup or a long list of poses.

Sometimes all we need is a beautiful location, a little bit of good light, and a few minutes to slow down and appreciate where you are right now.
